Where do you live?
Mukuchi Island on the Inland Sea.
Were you born on the island?
No, I was born and raised in Mizushima. My family runs an Inn, "Zouiwa Tei (Elephant Rock Inn)," started by my grandparents. My parents moved to the island twelve years ago to take over the business. I remained in Mizushima and worked in Kurashiki but decided to help my parents out when the Inn suffered damages from a typhoon in 2004.
What is Mukuchi Island like?
It's a small island with a population of eleven people. A 10 minute ride south by boat from Shimotsui.
Describe your typical day at the island.
I wake up at 8 o'clock to help with breakfast. I spend the day mowing the lawn and maintaining the house and facilities. Supper is served at sunset, and I spend the evening sitting back doing things like watching television and making bead accessories.
How often do you travel to Kurashiki?
A few times a month. Usually to buy supplies at warehouses and liquor shops, but I also visit my hair salon or go shopping and hang out with friends at times.
How do you like life on the island?
I like it very much. The sun sets right in front of the beach. I've never watched a sunset and felt it was beautiful until I moved to the island. I like the ocean, too. I never get tired watching it. The water is clear. You can see fishes swimming when you dive. I've grown very fond of nature since I came to the island. While there are inconveniences, there is time that money cannot buy here. Every day feels like a valuable experience.
Do you plan to continue living on the island?
I cannot tell. I might get married and leave the island, or, if my future partner wishes, I might stay. Things would only turn out the way they are meant to be.
