Mari Miyake
Born 1974 in Wakayama Prefecture. Employed in Okayama after graduating from high school. Settled in Shimotsui after marrying her husband who runs a fishery. “I grew up in a town of fishery and feel at home in Shimotsui. The people here are all very nice. I have blended in quite well and no one recognizes me as an outsider, now.”
A graffiti I found at Port Tanoura in Shimotsui. The door of a storeroom for fish containers is covered all over with fish. Its author is Mari Miyake who resides in Shimotsui. This is her first work.
^..^ Why did you begin graffiti?
It’s recognizable from the ships, and I had nothing else to do.
^..^ Why did you choose to draw fish?
Fish is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Shimotsui. I started out trying to draw an octopus and even had a rough draft done, but the color was dull and I quit. This stands out a lot better, don’t you think?
^..^ What would be the feature point of this work?
I’d say the bowels.
^..^ Would you continue drawing?
This work has certainly motivated me. Please put down “will travel anywhere if there’s a request.”
